This is a fine highlights CD, but you might as well invest in the entire thing, as it's phenomenal. And c.... -- get off your high horse! Ms. Lupone, while not my favorite singer in the world, sings "Being Alive" brilliantly, the emotions and text are equally valid for a woman to sing, and I'm sure that if a guy could physically sing "Defying Gravity" you would see it done. After all, "Loving You" from PASSION is originally written for Fosca (sung by the great Donna Murphy), but on iTunes you would think it's a man's song, since the only recordings available here are done by guys. REALLY!!!!

Sondheim Celebration at Carnegie Hall

This is a great CD. Madeleine Kahn singing I'm Not Getting Married Today and Patti Lupone singing Being Alive leave the recent Broadway cast in the dust--even thought I thought it was a wonmderful production of the show. I'm sure a man will sing Defying Gravity at some point--and who cares?

Not Bad...

But try to find the full, two cd recording. The difference because of the flow of the songs makes a huge difference in the emotional connection to the listener. I don't think itunes has it yet, but search for it. And who cares that Being Alive ws originally sung by a male? The beauty of Sondheim's work is that the songs can be lifted from their original context, and reinterpeted with just as much impact by another artist of either gender. Being Alive is also a staple of Bernadette Peters' concerts.

And for what it's worth, Raul Espranza has been singing Defying Gravity in his cabaret show since Wicked opened, and it sounds amazing.

Stephen Sondheim was the most highly regarded composer/lyricist for the musical theater in his generation. Having his first musical produced on Broadway in 1957 and his 14th in 1994, he straddled two eras. The broadly popular musical theater of his early years gradually became a more insular art form, addressing a smaller, more dedicated, more serious audience. This jibed perfectly with the composer's own tendencies. In a sense, he was to the world of show tunes what Bob Dylan was to that of pop...
