Editors’ Notes

Gustavo Santaolalla's music for Ang Lee's controversial, gay-themed western tragedy did considerably more than win the 2006 Academy Award for Best Original Score; "The Wings," the composer's spare, haunting guitar theme, quickly became part of the cultural zeitgeist. The balance of the score splits its time between Santaolalla's languorous Western pastoralism, old tunes sung by Steve Earle, Linda Ronstadt and Willie Nelson that capture the time and place even as they add emotional texture to the story (especially true of Nelson's tender cover of "He Was a Friend of MIne"), and a compelling slate of originals, highlighted by the composer's evocative collaborations with Emmylou Harris, Martina McBride and Teddy Thompson. It's a score that also stands as a landmark in the border-blurring diversity that has become a hallmark of film music in recent years (the composer also contributed compelling soundtracks for such Latin American film standouts as Amores Perros, 21 Grams and The Motorcycle Diaries).

Customer Reviews

Not That Bad

I completely disagree with a certain review I read about this soundtrack. Many of the songs have haunting and beautiful melodies, especially the ones by Gustavo Santaolalla. The Wings is an especially moving song. It seems like the reviewer was more focused on insulting Brokeback Mountain as a movie. It's not a "gay" movie. These songs aren't "gay". They tell of a tragic love story and I think anyone with feelings and emotions can appreciate them.

Haunting... Majestic... Soulful... Timeless

What else can be said for this collection of music? An all-encompassing mix of soulful melodies to remember loves past in quiet contemplation. The timeless music spans generations with the intensity of the heart. Whether it is the movie, story, or perhaps even a love lost for which one reflects up on, this album will stir the soul and heart as one.

It gives you what The Orginal Album didn't

Just by looking at the list of songs that this album has to offer, its easy to say that this soundtrack is not made up of the orginal songs conducted for Brokeback Mountain but the ones used and played in the backround of the movie itself. For those of you who want every single song that is played in that movie I would suggest that you get this album rather than the other Brokeback Mountain Album.
