Reseña de álbum

The first of the EmArcy recordings of the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet, this album features trumpeter Brown, drummer Max Roach, tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianist Richie Powell and bassist George Morrow in fine form. High points include "Stompin' at the Savoy," "I Get a Kick out of You" and Brown's ballad feature on "Ghost of a Chance." Near-classic music from a legendary group. [Originally released in 1954, Brown and Roach, Inc. was reissued on CD in 2004.]

Brownie and Max

What a great combo this was! Brownie was just a superb player...for some reason I think of Willie Mays as a sports analogue to Clifford Brown...clean, sharp and brilliant. And, of course, Max was the best bop/hard bop dummer this this of Klook (Kenny Clarke).

This is great jazz, but, it IS *jazz* and nothing else, so don't expect anything "smooth" or "funky" or "easy listening". I'm just sayin....

Clifford & Max

I've been listening to this west coast jazz since my college days (circa 1958). Clifford had a very short career but even now 50 years later his characteristic little "start of a bleep" entry into a note identifies him. That's how I remember Clifford (see Arturo Sandoval) and I know it's not Chet, not _________. Max Roach made albums with Rollins, Stitt. Mulligan and so many that are recognized and remembered for the other guys. And indeed a great many other guys learned to play drums in Max's style - still do. Here you have an album which condenses what that much imitated sound was all about. It's classic. If you are a collector, if you are a student, you want this benchmark in your collection.

Clifford Brown's death in a car accident at the age of 25 was one of the great tragedies in jazz history. Already ranking with Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis as one of the top trumpeters in jazz, Brownie was still improving in 1956. Plus he was a clean liver and was not even driving; the up-and-coming pianist Richie Powell and his wife (who was driving) also perished in the crash. Clifford Brown accomplished a great deal in the short time he had. He started on trumpet when he was 15, and by 1948...
