Album Review

Straight fusion set by trumpeter Tom Browne, replete with double-tracked vocals and songs heavy on backbeats and light on solos. Everything is nicely played, and the album did do moderately well on charts and with Adult Contemporary audiences.

One of the seminal albums at the birth of the music that would come to be called "Smooth Jazz".Before that label appeared-the music was variously called "Sophistifunk" "Rare Groove" "Disco Jazz".It's mothers/fathers many: Quincy Jones and all that he spawned /Dave Grusin and all that he spawned /Patrice Rushen/Roy Ayers/Steely Dan/Minnie Riperton/Lee Ritenour/Herb Alpert/Gino Vanelli/MFSB/Norman Connors/ GRP and A&M and PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL records/.1978 to about 1981.You can hear Grusins' production flourishes throughout this album.Downloading the tracks just reminded me of how much Jones' and Grusins' music dominates the soundtrack of my life.Hardcore jazz enthusiasts may scoff at this music...but it performed the same function as the jazz of previous generations: It combined disparate styles to form a unique and occasionally improvisational style that was accessible to a mass audience.I can't stop playing PROMISES FOR SPRING. PS: When you I-TUNES music people awaken from your nap...feel free to add FUNKIN' FOR JAMAICA. It's only a funk classic.

OMG!!! A 1st in a series.....

Tom Browne was (and still is ) one of the few jazz artists who fully embraced those things and sounds of the era and portrayed it in many of his songs. Artists like Tom Browne, Don Blackman, Bernard Wright, and other on the GRP label brought more fans into the jazz genre in the 80's! I wish there were more of his earlier albums on ITunes!

Wonderful CD!

By the way, why isn't Nightwind on iTunes??

Browne studied piano for a year when he was 11 and then switched to trumpet, attending New York City's High School of Music and Art. Originally interested in classical music, Browne discovered jazz while in college in the mid-'70s. He worked with Sonny Fortune, recorded with Lonnie Smith, and then signed with GRP.
