Album Review

It might seem a bit reductive to call Hayley Sales a female Jack Johnson, but the barefoot-in-the-sunshine vibe of the young singer/songwriter's debut album is so in keeping with Johnson's laid-back mellowness that the comparison is difficult to avoid. The first single, "What You Want," is an easygoing shuffle for acoustic guitar and brushed drums, topped by Sales' kittenish vocal and personal-empowerment lyrics, positively screaming for airplay on adult alternative radio stations and at organic food co-ops across North America. What keeps Sunseed from being merely coffeehouse fodder, however, is Sales' knack for melody and the relaxed charm of the simple but varied arrangements. (The 21-year-old Sales, the daughter of a recording engineer, produced the album herself at her dad's home studio on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.) The wide-eyed lyrics occasionally come off a bit clumsily, like the overworked metaphors of the opening "Jailcell Mind," but given Sales' relative youth, the occasional misstep is forgivable, and at the album's best (the Suzanne Vega-like closer, "Braille"), she makes up for the few faults.

beauty at it's best

i'm anxious to really analyze the lyrics in depth but from what i've heard so far, your absolutely beautiful voice blends perfectly with the acoustic guitars and soft drums, and i love how the songs have a sweet "prancing through fields" vibe. i really never listen to this type of music but every once in a while i come across something like this, which is most definitely an exception i won't regret. Me being a young musician myself, kudos to you for such success at a young age. lucky you with your father's studio though!

what i think

i think she has a great voice! she should definitely do more upbeat acoustic songs because she has the voice for it.

Way cool

Wow I love this natural beauty. Hayley has a beautiful voice and mind. It's a rarity to hear someone of her age sayin' what she says in such a manner. I can't wait to see her live and hear what her next album is all about. There's a big difference between 17 and 21! Go Hayley kid go.
