iTunes Review

Possessed by dazzling lyrical flows and production, this British/Sri Lankan MC is a unique performer and unlikely but welcome byproduct of globalization. Influenced by dancehall, hip-hop, garage and bhangra, M.I.A. is a child of the world, hop-scotching across multiple genres, but always informed by sharp political and cultural consciousness. Along with the amazing crossover smash "Galang," M.I.A. asserts herself most potently on sure shots "Bucky Done Gun," "Fire Fire," "Pull Up the People," and "Sunshowers."

Political album done CORRECTLY.

M.I.A. is one of a kind: a British-Sri Lankan Tamil electronic-indie-rap/hip-hop infused musician who has sold her own artwork to the likes of Jude Law and as well has won her share of art awards. She's put her art in display in galleries across London. She went to St. Michaels College of Art and Design (also where PJ Harvey and a countless number of respected artists studied). All of her music videos and album covers are based off of her art. Putting this ALL into consideration, you can only imagine what her music sounds like. It's a blend of a plethora of different cultures and genres. The beats are incredible, and the British production (which I tend to love) is sound and nails it. Pull up the people has an amazing beat. Just as well is wonderfully written. Sunshowers actually sounds like a sunshower. Very light and motherlike. Bucky Done Gun has an incredible beat and wonderful horns. Worth a listen. Those are only the first three (Banana is just an intro)! So just imagine how wonderful the rest of the album must sound like!

The world needs M.I.A.

Gangstas? Ha! When they have bombs, and they're fighting for the future of a people, we can talk about street credit. The anger, the humor, the confusion, THE BEATS all ripping through my speakers has turned my world of music upside down. This album needed to happen - we needed a part tomboy, part sex kitten, part militant from South Asia to really mark what this century is about. The obvious hits like '10 Dollar' and 'Bucky Done Gone' might distract you from the throbbing otherworldliness of 'Amazon' on first listen, but you shouldn't try to consume and process this album too fast. Let it nestle into your consciousness on its own time.

Very unique...

This ablum is one of those things you like or hate. But I would recommened this to everyone. One of my favs

If you read a lot about new music on the web, odds are pretty good that, at some point between the September 2004 release of "Galang" and the March 2005 release of Arular, you were struck with the urge to turn your computer off or maybe even heave it out of a nearby window. If you don't read a lot about new music on the web, the preceding sentence indicates how bewildering and draining the chatter about M.I.A. became. Arular, M.I.A.'s first album, leaked well before its official release, allowing...
