Editors’ Notes

Melbourne-based songwriter/producer Nick Murphy (a.k.a. Chet Faker) established himself as one of the most alluring voices in electro-soul through a series of sultry singles and collaborations. Built on Glass, his debut full-length, is an affecting, blues-inflected rumination on love, loss, desire, and emotional desolation. Set to spare beats, hypnotic samples, and vintage synths, Murphy’s yearning melodies are strung together on slow-burning tracks like “Talk Is Cheap,” “Gold,” and “Blush.” Even when the tempos are taken up a bit—as on “Cigarettes & Loneliness” or “Melt” (which features a guest verse by experimental American rapper/singer Kilo Kish)—the album keeps its dusky ambience. With influences that are wide-ranging and intricately woven—the crackling hi-hat of vintage Portishead, the multi-tracked harmony from Bon Iver, the smoldering R&B-inflected organ lines and guitar leads—Built on Glass is an imaginative, soulful delight.

This album cannot not be amazing

"Talk Is Cheap" is unbelievable. The beat. That sax. Those vocals. Definitely a "come hither by the fireplace and bring the the wine" kind-of track.

This album is close to perfect. Can't wait to see this artist become big in America.

If I Ruled the World.

So, let me tell you that this guy is on to something great. Chet Faker is trailblazing a diverse genre by simply diversifying it even more. “Talk is Cheap” is that song you’ll fall in love with and choose random hobbies to complete while it blast in background (e.g. Run, Clean, Dance in the mirror, have intercoarse with your 20 year old neighbor who keeps winking at you, etc. etc…) But just when you think you’ve had enough because your ears have had an orgasm, he creates an electronic, New York Vogue Ballroom, vintage, chill wave mixed with R&B song “1998”, no one can level up to him right now. Chet Faker is the new dope guy of 2014. I’d love to perform live with him. But because I can’t sing, I’ll simply just watch. Five Stars and nothing less.

Growing up on his dad's chillout compilations along with vocal albums from the jazz great Chet Baker, Australian electronica artist Nick Murphy combined the two and took the name Chet Faker when he launched his career with a downtempo cover of Blackstreet's "No Diggity." Looking to avoid any confusion with the Australian singer of the same name, Murphy dubbed himself Chet Faker when he made "No Diggity" his first upload to the Internet in 2011. After the song became a viral hit, Faker released his...
