iTunes Review

A cinematic kind of drama flows from nearly every corner of Burials, accentuating the degree to which AFI has grown up in the public eye—from the fervid punk roar of its early albums to the mature post-hardcore innovations of its more recent work. The atmosphere the band creates here (with help from producer Gil Norton) marks AFI's biggest leap forward—take the apocalyptic, ornately structured "A Deep Slow Panic." But while these tunes' sinuous melodies, unhurried tempos, and subtly textured settings may be a million miles from the music AFI made in its formative years, there's a darkness and intensity to Burials that's greater than anything in the band's past. Songs like "I Hope You Suffer" and "17 Crimes" employ crushing beats while leaving lots of space for eerie effects and dark vocals to take provocative twists and turns.

A Fire Inside best band ever

This album is going to be awesome. Everything AFI comes out with is amazing. I love I Hope You Suffer and 17 Crimes. They remind me a lot of Sing The Sorrow which is my favorite album. Definitely worth buying. Thank you AFI. I'll forever sing the sorrow. You are awesome.

Anthems For Insubordinates

The original hardcore punk rock group has changed dramatically over time, and we all know it. I've been interested in AFI's music for a while and they are one of my favorite bands. The feelings that I have on this new album are mixed. As with those who adore it, I do enjoy AFI's versatility for writing music. They can do it in so many shapes and forms, but of course we all have our preferences on what we consider to be their best. What I'm trying to say, is that it is solely preference on this new album. You either like this style of electro-pop-alternative, or you discriminate it. But we all must know that we all loved AFI somewhere along the road and for some period of time, and due to this, there is a certain amount of respect and loyalty for the band that needs to be shown. ~Through our bleeding we are one~

Choose to Love

Burials like Crash Love and Sing The Sorrow is like being happily married for 15 years then finding out she's sleeping with the popular undergrad at work. It hurts, really, really bad, but you choose to get over it, and love her no matter what your buddies say. AFI is the same way for me, and Burials is no exception. I have AFI tattoos from 1998 still on me and they represented everything amazing from this band, but now they have changed…significantly. There is no more chanting "Through Our Bleeding…We Are One" at concerts, instead it's a very, very different crowd. This album Burials is good, so far. It will never be Black Sails, but it's okay. She is still your wife, and although she will never be the woman you married, you still love her. AFI is the same thing, so get over it, or divorce the old and move on.

Formed: 1991 in Ukiah, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Northern Californian hardcore punk revivalists AFI formed in 1991 when the band's four founding members -- vocalist Davey Havok, guitarist Markus Stopholese, bassist Vic Chalker, and drummer Adam Carson -- were attending high school in Ukiah. Chalker was replaced by Geoff Kresge after eight months, and the band played several local gigs and released a split 7", Dork, with fellow Ukiah natives Loose Change (a band that incidentally included future AFI member Jade Puget).
