iTunes Review

While these guys are clearly treading in the heavy footsteps of Led Zeppelin, Mountain, Cactus and similar skull-crushing outfits, they bring a raw sense of aggression and hints of black humor to the table that makes their music sound virile and immediate. Guitarist Scott Holiday achieves a colossal sound dripping with fuzz-tone ferocity, providing the perfect foil for Jay Buchanan’s demonic vocal wails. Tracks like “Gypsy Heart” and “White Noise” are overflowing with the sort of glorious rock excess that most bands shy away from these days. The album’s title track is particularly roofshaking in its manic intensity. Beyond their volcanic power, Rival Sons’ songs display considerable melodic substance and bluesy groovesmanship. “All Over the Road” and “Young Love” encase ear-snagging hooks inside metal-tinged arrangements. Buchanan proves himself able to deliver a smoldering ballad with the heart-tugging “Only One.” Throughout, Holiday unleashes solos that range from the primal to the psychedelic. Pressure & Time is rock rendered on a heroic scale without apology.

sounds like Zeppelin, rock n roll resurrection?

I like this drummer.

Reminds me of the drummer of Bad Company. He made, and this fellow makes some great powerful sounds from a small kit. Go back and listen to "Pressure and Time" again, see what I mean.

Now, I still favor Neil Peart as the best, but when you can creatively rock a small kit, you have my attention.

If you already have the EP and first album then you know what to expect... and it delivers %100. Old school straight up rock. Still has a clear Zep vibe with subtle hints of the cult but you can even feel a little doors in some of these tracks. Jay Buchanan is clearly one of the strongest new voices on the scene. His solo stuff is also amazing though much more mellow. If you can find it, the live stuff is better than the studio. Clearly an exceptional talent. If your looking for an all around solid rock n roll band, this may well be your album for the summer.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Based in sunny Los Angeles, California, Rival Sons evoke the bluesy rock of bands like Led Zeppelin and the Black Crowes. Formed in 2008, the quartet of Scott Holiday (guitar), Robin Everhart (bass), Mike Miley (drums), and Jay Buchanan (vocals) captures that massively huge, guitar-driven classic rock sound, with rock-solid drumming and a riff-oriented approach to songwriting backing up Buchanan's soaring vocals. Shortly after forming, the band self-released its debut, Before the Fire, in 2009, produced...
