Album Review

Michigan's perennial string band Greensky Bluegrass deliver the follow-up to their breakthrough 2011 album Handguns with the equally robust If Sorrows Swim. In the three years since Handguns hit number three on Billboard's bluegrass chart, the progressive Kalamazoo quintet have honed their distinct style which blends the earthy warmth of traditional bluegrass styles with a more muscular, darkly hued rock tone. The fifth studio album in their 14-career, If Sorrows Swim contains contributions from dueling songwriters, mandolinist Paul Hoffman and guitarist Dave Bruzza, whose differing styles create a complementary whole that is a major part of the band's identity. Full of the top-notch playing fans have come to expect, it's an album grounded in the lonesome rural sound, but with plenty of punch and immediacy.

Beautifully crafted lyrics. Amazing musicianship. This band is so amazingly progressive. They have taken an old time sound and made it relevant again using uncommon effects and well timed improvisation.

My favorites so far are "In Control" (love the harmonies between Paul and Mike), "Windshield", "Burn Them" and "Leap Year". For the best listening experience, find a nice long country road on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Press play, turn the volume up and drive until the music stops, then turn around and hit play again. You won't be disappointed, I guarantee it.

Healing, as expected

Thank you for another gem. More medicine for the cabinet.

Great addition to your collection

Another great piece of work from the boys in Greensky Bluegrass! You might expect a let down from a band that has already released some classic jams but this just adds to their repertoire of fantastic lyrics and spectacular musicianship. I don't often buy bluegrass studio recordings because the bands are usually better live, but these guys never disappoint whether in studio or live. Truly inspiring work!

A string band with a big, expansive sound, Michigan's Greensky Bluegrass approach classic Americana styles with an exploratory, progressive spirit. Claiming to have come to bluegrass through the back door, the bandmembers cite rock influences as their gateway into more traditional acoustic styles. Formed in the fall of 2000 by guitarist Dave Bruzza, mandolinist Paul Hoffman, and banjo player Michael Arlen Bont, Greensky Bluegrass spent several years gigging informally around their hometown of Kalamazoo,...
