Burning from the Inside was the fourth and final album that Bauhaus released before imploding at the end of 1983, in part because of Peter Murphy’s pneumonia and in part because of the insurmountable intensity that the band had to generate to exist. With Murphy sidelined, the creative duties fell to bassist David J and guitarist Daniel Ash. Where early Bauhaus albums had been notable for their churning, lustful rhythms, songs here like “Who Killed Mr. Moonlight,” “King Volcano,” and “Slice of Life” are downright skeletal by comparison. In some ways Burning from the Inside could be viewed as the band’s “unplugged” album, though it does contain a few ferocious (if jaunty) stomps in the form of “Antonin Artaud” and “Honeymoon Croon.” Amazingly, the excellent “She’s in Parties” reached 26 on the U.K. singles chart, even though it was one of the album’s most uncompromising songs. For all the album’s creakiness, the band were clearly moving away from the caustic maneuvers of their early career. The finale, “Hope,” is one of the band’s best. Simple and chiming, it echoes one of Brian Eno’s elusive pop epigrams.

When Goth was Goth, not a trend

Wow this album takes me back to my youth! What a great piece of CREATIVITY. ORIGINAL. Real Goth from a real Goth band. Even a little melancholy. Back in the day when black lipstick/nailpolish could only bought at Halloween and trench coats purchased for $2.00 at a thrift shop. Aaaah, nostalgia.... "She's in Parties" has to be one of the most definitive songs for Goth/Punk/Underground at that time. "Who Killed Mr. Moonlight" and "Hope" are praiseworthy as well. The whole album is worth a buy. A great album for anyone who enjoys REAL music.

Best Bauhaus album

I must admit that my initial response to this album was indifference. I was only into "she's in parties." As I kept listening to it, the songs began to register with me. This record is filled with some amazing lyrics. songs like "Who Killed Mr. Moonlight," "Slice of Life," and "Kingdom's Coming," are perfect examples of great, dark songwriting. The song "Hope" seems to be the light at the end of the dark tunnel.

Truly great album

I first heard this album 17 years ago and it is still among my ten favorite albums of all time. She's In Parties is a classic example of the band's signature sound (if there is such a thing) and Hope is a perfect way to end an album which should have been the last thing we heard from the band. The only weak spot on the album is the title track whose self-indulgent length gets boring after a few minutes.
