"Burst" by Brutus on iTunes

EDITORS’ NOTES

This Belgian band’s debut is less a study in contrasts than a harmonious fusion of them. The opening “March” explodes with prog-punk contortions and avant-Halen guitar needling, yet Stefanie Mannaerts’ mesmerizing melody sounds as if it’s wafting in from a classic shoegaze record. She shows a more aggressive side atop the hardcore pummel of “Not Caring”—but even at their most furious, Brutus feel more hazy than heavy. And on “Drive,” the band achieve a perfect balance of post-punk aggression and dream-pop hypnosis.

Awesome.

jacob wt,

So not my style, but this is catchy as hell.

Pleasantly Surprised, this is a great album!

Who’s_The_Ross,

I randomly had this album suggested to me through Spotify, a method which hardly ever results in anything groundbreaking.

With that being said, this recommendation was spot on for me. The album is driven by punk aspects at its core, but brings in post hardcore, black metal and post metal touches to really hammer home the emotions being conveyed here.

The vocals are extremely powerful ranging from punk yells to great melodies. All of the vocal patterns are catchy as hell from the verses to the chorus of each song. The fact that she is able to do vocals of his caliber while drumming for this band is incredible. Props to her for a great performance on both ends.

I would list RIYL bands here, but I can't put a category on it. Needless to say, this could appeal to fans of Circa Survive, Refused, all the way to numerous atmospheric black metal.

Just give it a try and it'll grow on you. I know I'll be playing this on full blast all summer.
