This is the perfect album for headphones!
Cuushe creates a sound that feels completely enveloping. Its beautiful dream landscapes and maybe forgotten memories that make you ache or feel nostalgic. This music transports me to places I've been and others I can only imagine. So far 'sort of light' is my favorite, on this, my favorite Cuushe album.
Originally from Kyoto, Japan, Cuushe (Mayuko Hitotsuyanagi) recorded her debut album Red Rocket Telepathy while living in Europe. The album's dreamy, downtempo electronic pop was a natural fit for Japanese label flau, and the label released the album in 2009. Cuushe collaborated with producer aus (flau founder Yasuhiko Fukuzono) on ambitious triple-EP release Girl You Know That I Am Here But the Dream, which surfaced on flau in 2012 and featured remixes by Julia Holter, Motion Sickness of Time Travel, Blackbird Blackbird, and many others. Sophomore full-length Butterfly Case, co-produced by aus, emerged in 2013, and had a much brighter, more uptempo sound than Cuushe's debut. Based in Japan once again, she toured with Grouper and Julianna Barwick during their visits to the country. Cuushe provided guest vocals for several artists including the Boats, Populous, and Kidkanevil. 2015 EP Night Lines, again produced by aus, was Cuushe's poppiest release yet, and was co-released by flau and American label Cascine. ~ Paul Simpson
