Album Review

Los Inquietos del Norte never do anything halfway. Though using mostly traditional instrumentation and the folk forms of various regions of Mexico, this veteran group has consistently delivered both historic and original corridos with punk rock grit, a fierce independent spirit, and musical sophistication. Indeed, their original mission was to revolutionize the form; as evidenced by the 15 tracks on Los Psychos del Corrido Los Psicópatas, they've gone farther than even they could possibly have envisioned. Whether it's the off-the-rails, fist-pumping "El Motopsycho," the skittering polka of "La Clika Acelerada," the tender, lonesome balladry in "Se Está Volviendo Tarde," the traditional "Maldito Amor," the fast and furious "El Cuerno Terciado," the syncopated violin counter-rhythms in "El Señorón," or the waltz "Interesadas," the quality is arrestingly high. Often lyrics contrast sharply with tempos and melodies, revealing the group's deft sense of humor, as well as their poetic skill. Los Psychos del Corrido Los Psicópatas is easily the group's strongest collection yet.

Felipe and José Meza are the primary authors of the group's repertoire, comfortable in many styles, writing corridos, rancheras, boleros, and more. Los Inquietos have released nearly ten albums in as many years. Living...
