Album Review

If Mike Viola's voice sounds familiar, it's because he supplied many of the lead vocals for the Wonders on the soundtrack to That Thing You Do. Given his penchant for writing perfect pop songs, the role was obviously no stretch. On the five tracks that comprise Live at La Bonbonniere, the Candy Butchers employ hook-laden melodies and Viola's raspy vocals to wonderful results. "California Girl" is a breezy, laid-back ballad about a surfer girl, while the similarly sunny sounds of "Till You Die" downplay its markedly darker lyrics. "Bells on a Leper" and "Cupid Complained to Venus" are excellent tracks that were slated to be included on the Candy Butchers' debut album, which unfortunately was scrapped before its release. All five tracks here are keepers, making it all the more a shame that listeners had wait until 1999 to again hear from the band.

Essential Power Pop!

Mike Viola is the guy who sang the song "That Thing You Do" on the movie's soundtrack and THIS is the first EP that he and his band "Candy Butchers" released shortly thereafter. These 5 tracks are tremendous little power pop gems that sound as great today as they did when they were first released...and reminds me of the best of the early Beatles, the songwriting craft of Elvis Costello and somehow exudes its own originality. It's the best little EP I've ever heard. And the best $4.95 you'll ever spend. :-)

The indie pop/rock band Candy Butchers consist largely of singer/songwriter Mike Viola. He first adopted the group name for his duo with Todd Foulsham, playing around New York in the mid-'90s. After Foulsham left to start a family, Viola, as Candy Butchers, was signed to Blue Thumb Records and recorded the album Candy Butchers, which was scheduled for release in 1996, but failed to appear when the label shuttered; Blue Thumb did manage to release a Candy Butchers EP, Live at la BonBonniere, however....
