iTunes Review

Their final release, a post-breakup compilation, Give Me Convenience... documents the wild career of one of the most important punk bands of all time. Where many of their peers relished in sloppy playing and shock value schtick, the Dead Kennedys brought two major distinctions to the table; stellar musicianship and whip-smart political lyricism. Hailing from the Bay Area, the core group of inimitable frontman Jello Biafra, guitar virtuoso East Bay Ray, and bassist Klaus Flouride (accompanied by several drummers and an occasional keyboardist) churned out a wealth of slyly intellectual and gleefully subversive material over the course of less than a decade, with many songs remaining popular — and surprisingly relevant — over 20 years later. Infusing their songs with unexpected stylistic flourishes like surf music and Flamenco breakdowns, and employing incendiary imagery to great effect, they were undoubtedly the smartest punks in the room. This includes classics, hard to find B-sides and unreleased gems. It's all great stuff, but if you're new to DK, check out "Holiday In Cambodia," "Police Truck," and "California Uber Alles."

Dead Kennedys

I know I'm probably being stupid and missing something, but in this album, "California Uber Alles" has a slower tempo than in the album "Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables". (I bought the whole album at the store.) Otherwise, C.U.A. has a much faster tempo in that album than this one. Other than that, this album is completley amazing. If you like punk, you'll love this awesome album/band.

An Amazing Band!

For those who don't know WHO this band is, I feel sorry for you! The DKs were amongst the first wave of political hardcore punks bands who exposed the hypocracies of what was/is going on in our society. This album collects their early 7 inch singles, B-sides, and rarities. I love this record! Jello's satire is hilarious (Kinky Sex Makes the World Go 'Round). "Convenience or Death" as well as their other albums might offend those who have been sheltered from the "real world" but for those who are ready to open their eyes, The Dead Kennedys (love that name btw) is the band you to start with. I just wish the remaining memebers kept their ideals instead of suing Jello Biafra over him not agreeing to use "Holiday In Cambodia" in a Gap commercial...I guess some of us become what we hate :P

Jello Biafra, you are my Thought Action Police rock god!!!!!

I've been listening to DK since the mid 80s & have seen them live over 10 times and if you want a true representation of all punk ever truly was, this is the CD to own!!! This record is proof that DK is probably the best aged of all bands from that era such as Husker Du, Black Flag, and The Pixies. Night Of the Living Rednecks is the best!!!-- How many of you punk wannabes out there know it was recorded in 1978 or '79 in a dive bar???? Only a true fan of REAL punk that was around for the last 20 years & thinks Hot Topic resembles Walmart.

Years Active: '70s, '80s

The Dead Kennedys merged revolutionary politics with hardcore punk music and, in the process, became one of the defining hardcore bands. Often, they were more notable for their politics than their music, but that was part of their impact. The Kennedys were more inspired by British punk and the fiery, revolutionary-implied politics of the Sex Pistols than the artier tendencies of New York punk rockers. Under the direction of lead vocalist Jello Biafra, the Dead Kennedys became the most political and...
