Catching Rays on Giant

Originally released in November, 2010, as a German release, it's great to finally see Alphaville's latest album on iTunes!

The album, as a whole, is very good, and the four bonus tracks on the Deluxe Edition are even better.

There are two tracks that get reworked here, as they were previously on AV's limited box sets over the years. "Carry Your Flag" dates back to the first DREAMSCAPES set (1999), and it was also featured with "Miracle Healing" on the follow-up, CRAZYSHOW (2003). The one problem with "Miracle Healing" here is that one of the verses is cut short, but if you haven't heard it yet, you may not notice.

As for the newer tracks, "Song for No One" and "I Die for You Today" are the hit singles, and they start the album. Very entertaining, as are tracks like the pure-pop "The Things I Didn't Do" and the beat-heavy "Gravitation Breakdown."

I've read a lot of mixed responses from people on one of AV's fan forums, but I liked it, and if you should give each track a listen, I'm sure you'll find something you'll like as well!

Treading Water on Giant

Alphaville (Marian Gold) is still treading the Euro-Disco waters originally chartered on late 1990's release Salvation. Enjoyable on a song-by-song basis but loses impact when experienced as an album. Memo to Marian Gold: I'm not interested in what "Forever Young" would sound like with Autotune. Seriously. Cut it out.

I'm a big fan of metal music, but Alphaville is just one of those bands/artists that you just love listening to no matter of your musical roots. Great record: catchy melodies, interesting arrangements and, of course, great voice. Highly recommend to anyone who like to listen to high quality pop music now and then.

German synth pop group Alphaville enjoyed major success in the United States with their early hits "Forever Young" and "Big in Japan," and went on to a lasting career in Europe, South America, and Asia. Alphaville were formed by vocalist and lyricist Marian Gold and keyboard player Bernhard Lloyd, both of whom were members of the Nelson Community, a multimedia art collective based in Berlin. Gold and Lloyd were part of a short-lived band called Chinchilla Green (other members went on to form the...
