Album Review

Call of the Mastodon collects the influential Atlanta metal band's earliest recordings. Remixed and remastered by longtime engineer Matt Washburn, five of the nine cuts, "Shadows That Move," "Welcoming War," "We Built This Come Death," "Hail to Fire," and "Battle at Sea," appeared on the group's 2001 debut EP, Lifesblood. The other four sound like they were from the same sessions, and rely heavily on the group's trademark bone-crushing rhythmic assault. Even in their formative stage, Mastodon — few groups manage to do such justice to their moniker — sound like seasoned vets, and while there may be nothing as seamless as 2004's "Blood & Thunder" or "Megalodon," Call of the Mastodon is a brutal blueprint for the group's signature Metallica-meets-grindcore mayhem. [Call of the Mastodon includes a 20-track bonus sampler of two selections each from artists on the Relapse label.]

Short, but oh so sweet

Let me begin by saying Mastodon is one of my favorite heavy metal bands of all time, second only to Gojira. Now this is an absolute masterpiece on their part. Do not be put off by the length. I bought the 29 minute runner for thirteen bucks at Best Buy, and have not regretted it since. It's not even 9 bucks at the iTunes store. This is an amazing bargain. I definitely recommend downloading the entire album, but if your one of those people who for some reason refuses to do that even for miracle albums such as this, the tracks that rise slightly above the others are Call of the Mastodon, Deep Sea Creature, Battle at Sea, and the best off the album- We Built this Come Death. The album gets a perfect ten. And if you love this album, and find yourself clicking yes, then go immediately to the Gojira section of te store and download the album From Mars to Sirius. DOWNLOAD THIS IMMEDIATELY.

Mastodon is just great, vocals fit perfect with the lyrics. oh and Brann Dailor does kill on the drums. My favorite are "We Built This Come Death," "Battle At Sea," and "Call Of The Mastodon."

Sick Start To An Amazing Band

Now this is an awsome start from the most amazing band out right now. Not as good as there new stuff but it still kicks a**. Brann Dailor still kills on drums. My favorite songs on this album are Battle at Sea and We Built This Come Death but all the songs are good. If you like this then you have to check out Remission and Leviathan. Blood Mountain is also coming out September 12. Be on the look out.
