Album Review

Considering the three-year delay since Jane Siberry's previous release (which reportedly saw one completed album scrapped altogether), Siberry had obviously gone through some intense soul-searching to determine where her muse was to take her next. Judging by When I Was a Boy, she ended up retreating to some neutral ground that drew on several elements of her previous work without really taking things anywhere new. This is a very personal, introspective album, its intimate textures consistent with the ambient work that production collaborators Brian Eno and Michael Brook were well known for, and even average Siberry was still better than most of what was foisted on the public as female vocalist pop circa this album's release in 1993.

What An Unknown Treasure!

I was introduced to this cd through an article I was reading years ago about Holly Hunter. She listed it as one of her favorites and thought I'd give it a listen. I was in for a wonderful surprise! Siberry is so talented and her voice is angelic! The song structures are very unique and lyrics are thought-provoking. So, anyone willing to give this a go will likely be glad they did...

Sensual beyond belief

This is an atmospheric musical journey that you will want to return to many times. I, like the previous reviewer, first heard about this from that same Holly Hunter interview about her favorite things of 1993. I will forever be in both Holly and Jane's debt.

A soundtrack without a movie

Bought this cd when it 1st came out and could not believe how amazing it was everytime I listened it, a movie could be made around this cd/ album. Reminded me of Kate Bush style of writting, it will take you on your own personal journey if you just lay down close your eyes and let the music and lyrics take you away.

The idiosyncratic Canadian art-pop chanteuse Jane Siberry was born in Toronto, Ontario on October 12, 1955; after taking up the piano as a child, she began absorbing the classical and operatic inspirations which later distinguished her professional work. While earning a degree in microbiology, Siberry began performing at the local coffeehouse where she also worked as a waitress; ultimately, she used her tip money to fund her 1981 self-titled debut LP, a spartan offering...
