Undisputed master of the Portuguese Guitarra

This is one of those rare recordings which rewards the listener, yielding new gems upon repeated listenings. Portuguese Fado music is imbued with melancholy, and this disk is no exception: it exemplifies the spirit of "saudade," which loosely translated means something like "fate." This music is simply beautiful, from start to finish. The Portuguese supergroup Madredeus featured Carlos Paredes on their live CD Lisboa, which introduced the guitarra master to a wider audience, myself included.

Obscure.. Great try it.

Back in the day Robert J played his one under the new recordings. I think he played the whole thing.. a clue! This smote me then and now. Very Very different.. 12 sting classical Portuguese guitar.. Obscure.. GREAT try it. It’s singular, obscure and worth having some or all of. Carlos Paredes had (as far as I know) this recording. The Kronos Quartet recorded two versions of Verdes Anos and Romance nº 1 so he was cool to those cool ones too. Not much more about him to be sleuthed out on the web.

A beautiful collection of songs

I was not disappointed when I bought this album. After hearing "Canção Verdes Anos" and "Romance No. 1" performed by the Kronos Quartet on their album Kronos Caravan, I fell in love with these gems. Some time later I came across Guitarra Portuguesa when looking for more performances of these songs; I could not help but buy it. The emotion in the Coimbra fado sound of this album is captivating and deeply romantic.

Its penetrating sound is championed by Carlos Paredes, a sensitive, even shy performer who balances tradition and spontaneous invention. His original approach was likened to the freshness...
