Album Review

There's no denying the sonic and lyrical punch that embodies much of I Megaphone, the debut release from classically trained pianist Imogen Heap. The influence of both Kate Bush, musically, and Patti Smith, attitudinally, come through over the course of the record. Heap kicks things off with the wonderful "Getting Scared." Over an electronic groove, she delivers the lyric, a swan to ugly duckling tome brought to adult fruition with a style reminiscent of Liz Phair. Despite working with various musicians and three producers, including Dave Stewart, Heap manages to deliver an effort that is surprisingly seamless. Highlights include the aggressive "Angry Angel," the pretty piano-driven "Candlelight," and the passionate, sensual "Come Here Boy." A compelling album chock-full of engaging melodies delivered in a memorable voice.

Amazing album, BUT DON'T BUY IT ON iTUNES!!

Yes, this is the rare debut from Imogen. But please, consider this: Imogen is NOT making money off of this album's sales through iTunes. Since Imogen is not with the Almo label anymore, all of the dough goes to Almo. Until this album is officially available through Imogen's online store on her Website, please refrain from purchasing until you can be sure that your money will go straight to Imogen. After all, she's the one who deserves it. Almo didn't believe in this album before, so why should they feed off of Imogen's current success? This album is a wonderful debut, despite it being alot different than her Frou Frou or "Speak For Yourself" albums.

New to iTunes, but not NEW!

People need to realize that this album was originally released in 1998. This is not her newest work; it is only new to iTunes. Please see her web site (Discography) for more information. You can tell it is unpolished, and less sophisticated than Speak for Yourself, but it is quite amazing nonetheless. This album shows Immi as she was growing her skills allowing someone to see her progression into what she is today. Thank you iTunes for letting me add it to my digital collection.

The Beginning of Genius!

"I Megaphone" is Immi's first CD, written and recorded at the age of 19, yes 19!...most listeners don't realize that! Of course, it's full of her rebellious teen angst and also was more the sound of the time so it's more angry and less polished than her superlative "Speak or Yourself", as that CD is near perfection and also 10 yrs more mature. Immi was working with various producers testing the waters with this album. The essence of her new self produced work started to emerge in this debut CD.This album, followed by Frou Frou's "Details" right to her new album is a ride you should surely take. Immi's voice is so lovely and had such range, lush, delicate yet intense. I can't say enough about her music.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

As a rule, group efforts are normally launched before a solo career — not after a solo career is in full swing. First, the artist makes a name for himself/herself as part of a group, then the artist leaves the group to become a full-time solo performer. That's the standard procedure, but British singer/songwriter Imogen Heap took a different approach, having already established her solo credentials for several years before becoming half of the London-based duo Frou Frou. Although based in London,...
