iTunes Review

Beneath its low-fi trappings, Monster Head Room is an ambitious journey into 21st-century home-brewed psychedelia. The Sacramento-based Ganglians improve upon the oddball experiments found on their initial EP in these harmony-laden, reverb-bathed tracks by allowing the pop hooks to shine through the studio murk. The influence of Brian Wilson’s orchestral surfside epics is evident here, as are Hawkwind’s space-rock meanderings. What sets Ganglians apart is their combination of droll wit and disarming sincerity, heard especially in the wistful strains of “To June.” The album veers from the controlled wooziness of “Cryin’ Smoke” to the quivering tension of “Valient Brave” and chain-gang grind of “100 Years.” The funky slink of “Voodoo” — sounding a bit like Fleet Foxes on Novocaine — catches Ganglians at their most accessible. What binds the group together is their remarkable vocal interplay, filled with weird falsetto swoops and smooth unison chanting. Monster Head Room is often esoteric, but connects with enough primal emotion to give it some grounding.

Nouveau Lo-Fi Psychedelia

This a great gritty little psychedelic album. Very much like a Dead Meadow/Fleet Foxes combo with its own style of sometimes surf guitar psychedelic flavor. If you think you would enjoy something that is like a 60's garage/folk sound with some hauntingly good vocals these tunes hit the dinger. Good Stuff!

Grubbs met Sowles when he moved from Portland, OR to Sacramento, and met Comenzind, who introduced him to Hoover. They began trading tracks they had recorded at home, and when Grubbs was asked to play a show, Hoover, Comenzind, and Sowles became his backing band. The band’s name came...
