Album Review

Rowdy power pop revivalist Brendan Benson adds record label proprietor to his résumé with the release of Young Hines' full-length debut, Give Me My Change. The inaugural release for Benson's Readymade Records introduces listeners to the Atlanta born, Nashville based singer/songwriter Hines, who fronted a Beatles cover band before his online demos helped land his big break. That musical past helps reveal Hines' multifaceted ear for pop melodies as he jumps from breezy, early-'70s Paul McCartney stylings ("Forever Young") and bright, Squeeze-esque new wave ("Better Things"), to the brooding, slow burning of "Hold You and Scold You" and folk-rock winking of "Just Say No (Sometimes)." Though the genre jumping risks sounding heavy-handed or just not working as a cohesive album, Hines' sincere but never overeager delivery wins out, making for a debut that showcases his broad talents and invites repeated spins., Rovi

Great debut

Buy this album now! Genuine, pop-rock acts like this are hard to come by these days. Just take Rainy Day for example. It sounds like its been around for decades, yet it sounds completely fresh and exciting. Sure, many other artists channel the Beatles and various other music that came before their own, but it doesn't come off as cheap immitation in this case. Elsewhere, Young turns up the amps for in your face rockers like the title track and Can't Explode, where he exclaims "You're up the creek without a boat". Brendan Benson took this young man under his wing and is releasing this album on his own label, but due to the caliber of this album, he should be fearful of being outshined by Mr. Hines.

Been a fan of Young's for awhile now...such a true musician. Incredible talent!

Give Me My Change

Echoes of greatness ring throughout this record! Great writing with consuming melodies, vintage sound that wouldn't be out of place in the late 60s or on modern-day radio. Reminiscent of so many other great artists influences that it does a Vulcan mind meld and becomes its own beautiful thing!
