iTunes Editors’ Notes

There were few more successful R&B songwriters and voices more recognizable in the '80s than Lionel Ritchie. Fresh off a blockbuster outing with his funky band the Commodores, he was the new hit king of Motown and, after recording his wildly popular debut, he was under significant pressure to outdo himself. Which is exactly what he did on follow-up tunes like "Hello," "All Night Long," and six other magical numbers. These songs would become more than mere hit records; they'd become the soundtrack for much of the '80s.

Customer Reviews

Great Album- I didn't know who I WAS until I heard this album.

Oh Lionel. You have been hurt. You have been hurt by someone, that much is clear. Who hurt you?

CAN'T SLOW DOWN is a classic masterpiece!

This album is one of the best things to come out of Motown and if you know what I am talking about, we are talking about MOTOWN! To be the best in those days’s MOTOWN, you really had to be good. Here, Lionel graduated from the 'groupies' of the 60's and the 70's and into the "solo stardom" of the 1980's. With The Commodores behind him and one solo album under his belt, Lionel really went to work here. If you have ever dreamt of an album with hits lined up from the beginning to the end, this is it. 'All night long' made Lionel a global household. 'Hello' made him a caring guy. 'Stuck on you' got the Caribbean’s re-doing the song in Reggae countless times. As if the songs themselves weren't enough, the Videos pushed the record sales to the top! 'All night long' the video was a masterpiece. There was a party and Lionel's song delivered the good times and so was the 'Running with the night' video which had a night time party. The ballad 'The only one' which was co-producer by 'maestro' David Foster with Lionel is unique in it's own way in a sense that it took away Lionel's familiar tunes you hear from 'Still,' 'Easy,' 'Three times a lady,' 'My love,' 'You mean more to me,' 'Endless Love' and yes, 'Stuck on you' and 'Hello.' Foster's piano, keyboards and production style forced Lionel’s vocals to conform into what was to become a unique end result. Too bad that the music gurus at MOTOWN had already given up pushing ballads as singles for Lionel after the success of 'All night long.' They figured, "Mhh, we can market this guy in 'party songs' as well?" With that, a nice ballad like 'The only one' fell in the cracks. Get this album NOW!!!

I'm Gonna Listen To This Album All Night Long!

This album is great! It really shows off Lionel Richie's talent. My favorite song is "All Night Long", but they all are really great! If you don't already own this album, stop sitting there reading this review... and go buy it!!!!!!

After leaving the Commodores, Lionel Richie became one of the most successful male solo artists of the '80s, arguably eclipsed during his 1981-1987 heyday only by Michael Jackson and Prince. Richie dominated the pop charts during that period with an incredible run of 13 consecutive Top Ten hits, five of them number ones. As his popularity skyrocketed, Richie moved further away from his R&B origins and concentrated more on adult contemporary balladry, which had been one of his strengths even as...
