Album Review

The MB3 trio is a bit unusual, as it features three guitarists (rather than two). But veterans Jimmy Bruno and Vic Juris mesh well with newcomer Corey Christiansen, adding fine support by bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Danny Gottlieb, in this volume in a series of CDs exploring fresh arrangements of very familiar jazz works and standards. Songs that seemingly require a piano work well without one, especially Christiansen's intricate setting of Herbie Hancock's sauntering "Cantaloupe Island." Bruno chose to alternate phrases among the three guitars while showcasing the rhythm section a bit in John Coltrane's "Impressions." The standard "On Green Dolphin Street" is played so often it is in danger of overexposure, but Juris' inventive harmonic reworking, played at an atypically slow tempo behind the lead guitar, brings new life to this old chestnut. Jazz guitar fans will want to snap up this Mel Bay CD and keep an eye out for future volumes.

Those arrangements!

I was a little hesitant at first. I mean, as much as I love jazz guitar, three of them in one place seemed like it would almost be too much of a good thing. After a few listens, I was captivated. It is the arrangements that take center stage here, and these guys make it all sound so fresh, you don't really stop to think about how often you may have heard these songs. They also mix it up with electric, acoustic, and nylon string guitars, which flavor the album with a variety of timbres. It is some mighty tasteful playing by three gentlemen at the top of their game. Great effort, I am looking forward to Volume 2!

Standards Done Well

This album has some great musicians, three of them just happen to play guitar!!! Standards can be over done and boring or reinvented so much that the listener doesn't recognize the standard. In this album, the musicians did a great job of staying true to the Standards while keeping it fresh, creative, and new. I strongly recommend this album and I would love to hear Volume II.
