iTunes Review

For music fans looking to get into jazz, the process can seem extremely intimidating and confusing. Where to begin? With so many subgenres, distinctive eras, and gigantic discographies, the initial jump is like saying "I like to read" and then picking up a set of Encyclopedia Britannicas. This compilation is one worthy intro; Blue Note Records is arguably the most important jazz label of all time, and it played a crucial role in the development of just about every important figure since it started putting out albums back in 1939. The material here is primarily from the '50s and '60s. It sticks to big names you've probably at least heard of and includes several classic hits that even the most casual fan should recognize. It mostly features tracks in the straight bebop style, giving listeners a basic foundation instead of going for the more obscure, out-there free jazz. An extremely listenable set, this may be intended for the neophyte but is still a great mix even if you're a seasoned jazzhead. Featured are time-tested gems from John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, and more.

Where's the Miles Davis?

I love most of the selections Blue Note has chosen for this release but to create a compilation album of "An Introduction to Jazz" and not include something from Miles Davis is a sin. That aside, I recommend this mix to anyone who is thinking about getting into jazz or even someone who has been listening to jazz for a while. This compilation is a very great place to start..... as long as you already own "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis that is.
