Customer Reviews

Fascinating musical crossroads.

Prince Dimitrie Cantemir (1673-1723) was a Moldavian nobleman, philosopher, linguist and composer who spent 22 years as a diplomat/pampered hostage at the Sultan's court in Istanbul. He wrote on history and music and developed a script to make an invaluable record of "Oriental" (here meaning of the Ottoman empire) music. There's been a revival of interest in his own compositions, some in the Ottoman style blending Eastern and Western influences. Works here include folk music and improvisations, and incorporate modern instruments he probably did not know.

Ihsan Ozgen is a mostly-self-taught Turkish virtuoso on a variety of stringed instruments including the tanbur, violoncello, lavta and kemence, is an acclaimed expert on Turkish music who has taught in the US at several universities, and has organized and performed with the groups Bosphorus and Anatolia. For more by Ihsan Ozgen see the albums "Masterworks of Itri and Meragi" and "Remembrances Of Ottoman Composers" and "Anatolia." For more Turkish music see the iMix "Huzun: Istanbul melancholy."

Taksim means improvisation on a melodic theme.
