Album Review

Avishai Cohen, who became well known in the jazz world during his period with Chick Corea, is one of the top bassists in the world. His virtuosity and constant creativity in both a modern mainstream format and on funkier grooves seem effortless. As Is...Live at the Blue Note contains a CD (the first seven selections) and a DVD. "Smash," "Feediop," the ballad "Remembering" and an overlong "Caravan" (the one non-original) are featured in both formats while three songs are different. Cohen takes many solos and is always a prominent force in the ensembles. Pianist-keyboardist Sam Barsh and drummer Mark Guiliana communicate very well with Cohen while trumpeter Diego Urcola and tenor soprano saxophonist Jimmy Greene add plenty of fire during their guest appearances. The camera work is excellent for the DVD so one can equally enjoy hearing and seeing these skilled musicians at their best.

Live at The Blue Note....

Just picked up this album after hearing the Caravan cut on an online jazz radio station. This album is quality material. I had never heard of Avishai Cohen and can now say that he and his band know how to play some solid jazz tunes. I actually purchased the CD from a store, since there is a DVD of a live show from the Blue Note Jazz Club in NYC. All of the cuts from the CD and DVD are from a series of shows that Cohen and his band played at the Blue Note last year. The musicians in his band are very talented. He has a unique style combining Israeli roots with other varied jazz genres. All original compositions except for Caravan, which is a bit lengthy but a great version nonetheless. If you are looking for some new jazz of the live show variety, this album is a solid choice.

He has always been a favorite of mine.
I caught this performance on cable one evening and was delighted by this performance! He is one of the rare musicians which can still tap in to pure moment and creativity. A truly talented musical soul. This album is a testament to just that.

Born and raised in Israel, Avishai Cohen has often combined Middle Eastern and Israeli music with both electric and acoustic jazz. After playing piano in a high-school jazz band, Cohen switched to the electric bass and soon fell in love with the music of Jaco Pastorius. Cohen was 16 when he enrolled in the Music & Arts High School in Jerusalem, and as a young adult, he played a few local gigs in Jerusalem before...
