Sweet,sweet music

I'll come clean and state right away that I've been a JJ admirer from the very beginning. He does little wrong and the challenging twists and turns his music takes constantly surprises and delights. My dad was a big fan of the big band sound in the years before I was born and growing up I feasted on Beatles and Basie, Glenn Miller and Glen Matlock, the Thin White Duke and Thin Lizzy. Ellington was another part of the kaleidoscopic aural diorama I tuned into. Joe hasn't so much done a tribute here but reworked some classic melodies in his own quirky style and produced a fascinating and enjoyable listen that is yet another diversely wonderful addition to hos outstanding catalog. If, like me, you find his work indispensable you are going to love it. If you want to simply tune in to something old that sounds refreshingly new then give this a go. It is sweet, sweet music!

joe rules

joe is the master and we are his pupils. listen and learn my friends. this album is a journey i highly recommend.

Swing!

I am no connoisseur by any stretch nor an art/music critic but this rendition of "If it ain't got that swing" really brings both the tune and the meaning of the title squarely into modern times. The rest of the album may have to grow on you for a bit so if you have no time (or patience) stick with that track alone for now. Since this is nothing like any other Joe Jackson work you might know it would be good to listen to all the track previews before jumping in.

Me, I am glad I took the leap of faith!

In his 1999 memoir, A Cure for Gravity: A Musical Pilgrimage, Joe Jackson writes approvingly of George Gershwin as a musician who kept one foot in the popular and one in the classical realms of music. Like Gershwin, Jackson possesses a restless musical imagination that has found him straddling musical genres unapologetically, disinclined to pick one style and stick to it. The word "chameleon" often crops up in descriptions of him, but Jackson prefers to be thought of as "eclectic." Is he the Joe...
