Album Review

Perhaps one of the most influential forces in the metalcore genre, Converge changed the face of underground metal with their fusion of hardcore punk and thrash, creating a perfect blend of raw aggression and astounding technicality. Capturing some of their earliest and most elemental work, Caring and Killing bundles the bulk of the band's debut album, Halo in a Haystack, along with a handful of unreleased tracks, demos, and EP cuts. What really makes this set special, though, is that it not only allows listeners to hear a band during its most formative years, but also an entire genre.

It Starts Here...

An overall solid debut from one of the most respected pioneers of true metalcore. Although Converge weren't at their full potential on this release as on other mature releases such as "Jane Doe" or "You Fail Me", songs like "2 day Romance" and "I Abstain" remains some of the finest additions to their entire musical catalogue. From start to end however, you'll easily recognize their signatures. The technicality, abrasive guitar crunches, and melodic elements that make up this incredible band are all present on this release.

i think this album was all material recorded prior to the bands 96 debut record Petitioning the Empty Sky. While vast sonic improvements would insue, this is a great look at early noisecore.

The Boston-based metalcore and mathcore pioneers were initially comprised of vocalist/visual artist Jacob Bannon, guitarist Kurt Ballou, bassist Jeff Feinburg, and drummer Damon Bellorado, with second guitarist...
