Album Review

While Son Volt's first two albums, Trace and Straightaways, received critical acclaim, they are both very restrained and sparse works underlain with languidness. These albums hinted, in their best moments, at Son Volt's potential to both write beautiful songs and rock out, but the band never seemed to completely let loose and turn it up to 11. Part of this may stem from their eclectic mix of musical influences. While the juxtaposition of styles ranging from country to bar-band rock & roll has been the key to Son Volt's sound, it has also been a point of contention for those who have criticized them for not knowing what sort of band they wanted to be. Wide Swing Tremolo represents an attempt to somewhat break the mold of the earlier releases, especially from the intensely sparse Straightaways. Wide Swing Tremolo is a wide-open, rocking album with precious little of the overt country influences found on previous Son Volt works. Instead, this album is driven by R.E.M.-like arpeggio guitar riffs and muscular, warm rhythms. It's a strong album.

i know this is not typically noted as son volt's "best" -- but it's definitely my favorite. there's such brooding warmth to these songs. it makes me long to be 22 and on a late night drive through midwestern backroads. one of my favorite "late-summer" albums (along with wilco's "being there" and ryan adams' "heartbreaker". just timeless music.

Good Album

I like this album but I'm confused as to why it's spelled Wide Swing Tremolo on the album cover while iTunes has it as Wide Swing Tremelo. Kind of odd.

machinations of tear stained rust belts

Son Volt return with chimichanga dust magnetations, as evidence of the happening of view machinery meanings. The streetside blue living of bevels. Look into the protective ust coat of sandy time. Driving in the parralells of streak shining. When Jay sings, "What I's give for that HAT to be MEDICINE" you can somewhere in ear shot anyone can stand up and think "YEAH MAN" and then like, whatever else they would think when you hear that. Way to go guys, Way to spend the time man.

After touring in support of their 1993 masterpiece, Anodyne, the seminal alternative country band Uncle Tupelo split up over long-simmering creative differences between co-leaders Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy. Tweedy recruited much of the band to form Wilco, while Farrar teamed up with original Tupelo drummer Mike Heidorn to form Son Volt, the more tradition-minded of the two Tupelo offshoots. Joined by brothers Jim (bass) and Dave Boquist (guitar, fiddle, banjo, fiddle, steel guitar), the band signed...
