A disappointing feat in audio engineering
Though the actual performance is brilliant, this album falls into a pitfall far too common for classical music recordings. In an attempt to capture the vast dynamics of the choir, the audio engineers set the master volume far too low to hear the pianos and even mezzo pianos without using head phones. If your looking to play these recordings in your car, or even through a normal set of speakers, forget about it, you will have to set the volume so high that the crackles of your speakers will ruin the beauty of the music. Unfortunately, I felt ego was stronger than practicality in this recording which made it useless for anything beyond quiet home listening.
The Howells Requiem is worth the the entire album. The vulnerability and emotional intent of the score is handled masterfully. It's a shame this ensemble isn't together anymore.
