iTunes Review

Hold That Tiger is an official bootleg of a live show in Chicago on Oct. 14, 1987. Sonic Youth was touring with Sister—its most accessible album to date—and nine of that album's 10 songs are here, along with two from Evol ("Tom Violence," "Expressway to Yr. Skull"), two earlier tracks ("Brother James," "Death Valley '69"), and four Ramones songs as an encore. The fidelity is very good for a bootleg, but it's not as defined as an official live album would be expected to be. In truth, the recording retains a certain soft focus in keeping with Sonic Youth's underground status. Most importantly, the songs are among the band's best. In some quarters, Sister is ranked as the best Sonic Youth album. It was certainly the first to keep its focus on songwriting and to work, for the most part, within the confines of more traditional forms. Yet there's still glorious noise to be heard. "Stereo Sanctity" works up quite a lather. "Pipeline/Kill Time" takes a vicious whirl into canyons of feedback. "Catholic Block" explodes into chaos before finding its central riff.

Customer Reviews

A great recording of the SISTER era. The energy that you feel from this performance is like a rollercoaster that lost its wheels and you have to try your best to grip yourself from not falling off. For 1987, Im satisfied with the quality of the recording. The setlist is one of the best. This show captures a certain spark of Sonic Youth's career in terms of their songs and live performance. Get it if you want to hear raw fast versions of these songs!!!

Sonic Youth were one of the most unlikely success stories of underground American rock in the '80s. Where contemporaries R.E.M. and Hüsker Dü were fairly conventional in terms of song structure and melody, Sonic Youth began their career by abandoning any pretense of traditional rock & roll conventions. Borrowing heavily from the free-form noise experimentalism of the Velvet Underground and the Stooges, and melding it with a performance art aesthetic borrowed from the New York post-punk avant-garde,...
