Album Review

A fine cross-section of guitarist/vocalist/comedian Slim Gaillard's 1945-49 studio recordings (most of which have not yet appeared on CD), this Folklyric release has most of the best titles that Gaillard made with his musical partner of the time, bassist Tiny "Bam" Brown, whose high-pitched voice contrasted well with Slim's smooth but nutty delivery. With appearances by pianist Dodo Marmarosa, either Zutty Singleton or Scatman Crothers on drums, and (in the 1949 session) pianist Cyril Haynes, this album (which contains 16 selections) has such odd gems as "Cement Mixer" (a huge hit), "Drei Six Cents," "Laguna Oroonee," "Groove Juice Jive," "Arabian Boogie" and "When Banana Skins Are Falling." Unique and often humorous performances.

Good Music -HORRIBLE MASTERING

We are long past the time of stereo rechanneling, fake reverb and out of phase fake stereo, but this recording commits none of these faux pauxs . This recording sounds like a rank amatuer with the cheap version of Sound Forge, extremely poor source recordings, and extremely poor knowledge of re-mastering. Advice? Look for these recordings on the myriad of other sources that have infinitely better mastering. There are many other people out there who care enough about their product and jazz history so that you can purchase these recordings in far better fidelity and enjoy them properly.

iTunes SHOULD review it's products a tad more thoroughly. This is beyond rank amateur and reeks of the slickster looking for an easy buck. DO NOT PURCHASE as this will only encourage further such attempts. I am a jazz lover and also do transfers and digital re-mastering. I would be embarrassed to show my face in the sun if I ever tried to sell such masters.

One of the most eccentric vocalists ever to hit the jazz scene, Slim Gaillard became a legendary cult figure thanks to his own privately invented jive dialect "vout," a variation on hipster slang composed of imaginary nonsense words ("oreenie" and "oroonie" being two other examples). Gaillard's comic performances, laid-back cool, and supremely silly songs made him a popular entertainer from the late '30s to the early '50s, especially on the West Coast, and several of his compositions became genuine...
