Album Review

By now, Desperation Band is probably tired of the constant comparisons to Hillsong United. They are, after all, the stateside equivalent of the popular Australian collective, a church-based team committed to putting an alt rock spin on praise & worship. In that respect, Center of It All, Desperation's follow-up to 2009's Light Up the World — arguably the group's best effort — doesn't attempt to fix what ain't broken. But where its predecessor was a Pop-era U2 homage, disco ball and all, Center of It All is much more demure, maybe even devotional. That means the requisite praise rockers are there ("All to Him," "Wonderful"), but they're outnumbered by the Coldplay-inspired ballads ("God You Are My God," "Our God Is Coming"), most of which build from a barely there Brit-pop foundation — a simple backbeat, a lightly plucked acoustic guitar, a lone piano, Peter Gabriel-type synths — only to explode, on occasion, into huge, arena-friendly choruses. The formula doesn't change much from beginning to end, but then again, that may be precisely why young worshippers like Desperation so much: for catalyzing their own prayers and praises into a sound they understand.

Desperation Band

Hi all… I've never written a review. A first for me. :) I just wanted to drop in and say, on behalf of the dband, that we are so proud to release this project to you. We spent the better part of a year working on this album. Prayer, sweat, tears, laughter, sleeplessness, joy, more prayer, anxiety, writing, editing, decisions, hoping, fearing, loving, more prayer, celebrating, living, and everything in-between. We are PRAYING that as each of you breathe in the realities of God while you worship Him, you will then breathe Him out into your world. We are not the center of anything except His love. HE is the Center of EVERYTHING. It's not something we make him. It's something He is. Praying for you as we all collaborate with the great work of God. This project was the work of a great community that has overwhelmed us from the start. Paul Mabury is behind it all. Amazing producer. Jason Ingram is an inspiration. Mia Fieldes and Stu G gave us "pinch-me" moments. Kari Jobe and Meredith Andrews we love you! Jimmy and Sydney Rudder are next level. David Todd is a God-send. Thank you Integrity Music. Thank you New Life!
All in all, we are just so grateful. I still can't believe we get to do this.
Lets keep our eyes on Jesus, the Center Of It All! EVERYTHING ELSE PALES IN COMPARISON TO HIM.

Alternative CCM outfit Desperation Band grew out of a 2001 Christian student ministry conference held by the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Taking an alt-rock, U2-like stadium approach to praise & worship themes, the band was originally centered around three praise & worship songwriters, Jon Egan, Jared Anderson, and Glenn Pakiam, all of whom already had successful musical careers going and were well established in the CCM community. While sticking to praise & worship themes, Desperation...
