Ultimate Painting

Formed when Jack Cooper’s Mazes were supporting James Hoare’s Veronica Falls on a European tour, Ultimate Painting became reality over months of home recording where the two explored their interests in organic, ’60s-based rock ’n’ roll. The drumming is deliberately primitive, evoking The Velvet Underground’s Maureen Tucker, while the melodies show more ambition and the lyrics aim for Ray Davies–type observations. Vocals are downplayed in the mix, emphasizing their plainness, which generally works best for indie rock fans. “She’s a Bomb” breaks into Zombies-like Technicolor, as opposed to the title track,” “Central Park Blues,” and “Jane” where the greys spread.
