Album Review

Joe Satriani always stood apart from the legions of guitar virtuosos who surfaced in the late '80s, largely because he had a sharper ear than his peers. He didn't limit himself to hard rock or heavy metal, preferring to draw in elements of pop and jazz as well. At his best, he stood head and shoulders above his peers, many of whom were his former students. However, his records were a little uneven, especially those featuring his vocals, and it seemed like he had painted himself into a corner by 1995's eponymous effort. Remarkably, moving to Epic revitalized his career. Recording wih longtime bassist Stuart Hamm and drummer Jeff Campitelli, Satriani turns in an all-instrumental record with Crystal Planet. It's an instrumental record with a difference, finding the guitarist taking more chances than ever. There are some familiar hard rock and ballad workouts, but what's astounding about the album is that it shows his technique continuing to develop and deepen, reaching into new, uncharted waters. It's his finest all-instrumental effort since Surfing With the Alien.

Joe Satriani's Best Album!

It's amazing that in 1998, over a decade after debut, with many popular songs and albums under his belt, Satriani could create his best work. As an instrumental guitarist album, this has got to be one of the best created, right alongside Joe Pass "Virtuoso" and Vai's "Passion and Warfare". I'll also include Liquid Tension Experiment because Petrucci's playing is remarkable, although that is not strictly a guitarist album. Satch's one drawback on his early albums like "Surfing" may have been his slightly thin, over-compressed tone. This album fixes all that with the deepest, most monsterous tone he's had on record. It's one of those albums that is great to listen to staring at the night sky, laying on the hood of car. Maybe you'll find Satriani's home planet-He's seriously an Alien. This is great to listen to

Satrianis Best!

My personal favorite from Satch. It encorporates EVERYTHING!! His blazing scales runes, amazing sweeps, pedal effects galore, dive bombs and crazy harmonics...all while maintaing unbelievable musical harmony. Up In the Sky and Crystal Planet just blow me away everytime I hear it. Satch has an awsome and one of a kind guitar tone in this CD also. If your into Dream Theater, Vai, and all the virtuosos...then give this a try. Its an excellent listen, something refreshing in the more and more mundane world of rock.

MOST TALENTED GUITARIST IN THE WORLD

I can't believe that not one person wrote a review about joe. He is so talented and all of his songs rock! Trust me, he is much better than any of this new pop and hip hop garbage that ppl think are good. Also, he is much better than any rock band i know. THIS GUY ROCKS SO START BUYING ALL OF HIS MUSIC AND I KNOW YOU'LL LOVE IT

The 1980s were a golden age for guitar heroes but even six-string slingers need a hero of their own. Enter Joe Satriani. More than a hero, Satriani was a mentor, setting an example of what could be done with the instrument and also serving as a teacher to such luminaries as Kirk Hammett, Charlie Hunter, Primus' Larry LaLonde, and Steve Vai. This alone makes Satriani a significant figure in the history of rock guitar, but when he launched a career as a recording artist in 1986, he performed the rare...
