I wondered what happened to Nu Shooz until I heard a "snippet" of their music on a beverage commercial while viewing the Winter Olympics earlier this year. Wonder of wonders, many others must have thought the same because it started a "buzz" in the universe and folks wanted more of Nu Shooz! Now, with the release of "Pandora's Box" featuring the new Nu Shooz Orchestra, their fans should be surprised and happy. It's one of those relaxing yet upbeat, intelligent albums that surprises you with it's warmth and charm...a keeper in my collection!!

Valerie Day and John Smith burst onto the pop scene in 1986 as the duo, NU SHOOZ, with the hit single, “I Can’t Wait”. In the meantime, Day and Smith, have continued writing, performing, and teaching music while expanding their name to NU SHOOZ Orchestra. Their current pop-jazz blend is now available on the aptly-named Pandora’s Box. It is aptly-named because the Pandora’s Box project goes from 60’s spy theme flavor to straight vocal jazz to light pop-funk grooves. Even with its genre sweep approach, the disc is focused on fun sounds and you can feel that.

The CDs best moments involve the more orchestral and jazz flavors, and Valerie Day’s voice is still a winner. “Right Before My Eyes” is a breezy standout single that stays with you like a warm, spring day and “Before The Fall” is my favorite pop cut on the project. While I appreciate the inclusion of their classic singles, “I Can’t Wait”, and “The Point of No Return”, presented here in a more of an adult contemporary pop fashion, the singles feel like an unnecessary flashback as if NSO needed to either jog my memory or prove something to new listeners. But like I said before, it’s all in fun and even with the re-interpreted tracks, each listen brings a smile. ♫♪
