Album Review

Tetragrammaton Records released a soundtrack album for Che! when the film came out in 1969. Twenty-nine years later, Lalo Schifrin's album "music from and inspired by the motion picture 'Che!'" re-creates some of those music cues and adds others. The composer takes his lead from the traditional music of Cuba, Argentina (his native country), and Bolivia, where the film was set, and he makes extensive use of guitarist Juanjo Dominguez. The result is an instrumental album of South American styles that stands on its own, thankfully, since the film (which starred Omar Sharif in the title role and featured Jack Palance as Fidel Castro) doesn't get too much circulation these days.

Captures the essence

This album really evokes the sounds of nostalgic Cuba and South America. I remember coming across this back in college and just falling in love with the variety of talent expressed here. What a joy to finally find it again on itunes and be able to listen to it without the record scratches!
