Recorded in a flurry of activity shortly before this cool tenor-sax ruler exiled himself to Europe for 14 years, Go offers a superbly casual setting for Dexter Gordon's unmatchable, inventive soloing. Accompanied by pianist Sonny Clark (a cult favorite who would die the following year at 31), Gordon proves himself one of jazz's smoothest, wittiest, and most commanding voices on Sinatra-associated ballads such as "Where Are You" and lively hard-bop workouts like "Three O'Clock in the Morning."

Dexter Gordon had such a colorful and eventful life (with three separate comebacks) that his story would make a great Hollywood movie. The top tenor saxophonist to emerge during the bop era and possessor of his own distinctive sound, Gordon sometimes was long-winded and quoted excessively from other songs, but he created a large body of superior work and could battle nearly anyone successfully at a jam session.
