Album Review

The second Liquid Tension Experiment album doesn't contain anything quite as self-indulgent as its predecessor's chops-heavy half-hour jam session "Three Minute Warning"; the epic piece here, the 17-minute "When the Water Breaks," is much more composed and therefore focused (even if it's not what you'd call a tight listen). Elsewhere, the music blends Dream Theater-esque progressive metal (logically) and spontaneous interaction with mellower, more lushly textured pieces; the high level of musicianship is, of course, beyond question.

How best to sing their praises...

What can I say that haasn't been covered in the reviews so far? Probably nothing, except perhaps this: To me, this band represents a fundamental completeness that I have NEVER heard in a music ensemble before... (it sounds like) they're not doing it for the money, and they're (unfortunately) not doing it for the fame, and they maybe aren't doing this simply to prove they are better than most anyone at what they do... it's almost like they knew once they had formed that they had to give us at least these two blessed albums so that the world would be a better place. LTE represents everything that's great about music... so do what everyone on these reviews is saying and BUY IT NOW!!!!... haha.

One of a kind!

When I went searching for some more Transatlantic, I came across this album. As I read about it, my jaw started to drop BEFORE I downloaded and listened to it. I'm a rhymatist by profession [percussionist and composer] and a big fan of Mike Portnoy (as well as Tony Levin) so, I had to try it out, and it was a great decision. This is strong, rhythmically driven, (the exchange of straight rhythms before and after a triplet is a pleasure to hear) and throws in a few surprises (hint-listen for the screaming cat!) The blend of bass, percussion, keys and guitar makes you want to shout! If you like Transatlantic, Holdsworth, TriPod or the like, please, listen to this album, it's worth it!!

This album is insane. Every player is one of the best in the world on their instrument. Think Dream Theater minus the vocals. There is never a dull moment...even being instrumental, i don't even know what else to say...stop reading this and buy this album. (and LTE1 if you don't already own it)

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s

A sort of instrumental prog-rock/prog-metal supergroup, Liquid Tension Experiment features Dream Theater's John Petrucci (guitar) and Mike Portnoy (drums), keyboardist Jordan Rudess (who has worked with the Dixie Dregs and has since joined Dream Theater), and bassist extraordinaire Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, and many others). The group issued its self-titled...
