iTunes Review

If you want to truly re-create the experience of a Dinosaur Jr. show, play this at full blast on a very loud stereo system. Hearing damage and tinnitus should result. Aside from Motörhead and Bob Mould, no act turned loudness into a sharper weapon. Guitarist J Mascis might settle down for a moment of quieter intensity, but it's never long before he steps on a pedal and sends the crowd into a frenzy. Chocomel Daze is a rare recording from a 1987 show at Doornroosje in Nijmegen, Netherlands, with Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow, and drummer Murph working through Dinosaur Jr.'s early catalog at top volume. You're Living All Over Me was making serious waves in the alternative rock community at the time, and the band was on its first European tour. The sound is muddy and should be considered decent bootleg quality. Vocals, not surprisingly, are often drowned out by the instrumentation or howl above the mix from a distance. As a memento of that glorious time, Chocomel Daze fulfills its mission.

Already I am stoked

Best album of the original trilogy. So glad they are back together and making music again. The album redesign is awesome. I'd love a t-shirt of it.

Chocomel Daze

I just saw them in Denver. The show was awful, the sound was crap, and you could not hear J's voice one bit. we tried yelling this out. But to no avail. This record (18$) I s the same. great artwork though. Don't waist youre time, or money. buy the poster, if one is availible.

Not usually my type of music listening, but...

Mountain Man… the guitars are like 'whoa'! Other tracks are cool.

I wanna t-shirt too! med or large.

Dinosaur Jr. were largely responsible for returning lead guitar to indie rock and, along with their peers the Pixies, they injected late-'80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise. As the group's career progressed, it turned into a vehicle for J Mascis' songwriting and playing, which had the ultimate result of turning Dinosaur's albums into largely similar affairs. Over time, Mascis shed his hardcore punk roots and revealed himself to be a disciple of Neil Young, crafting simple...
