Album Review

Shad Weathersby has aimed for a highly accessible style on his children's album, Chomp Chomp. That means not worrying too much about hitting notes and playing perfectly; instead, Weathersby employs a kiddie chorus and goes for a friendly feel in songs about time, colors, Christopher Columbus, and a disobedient roach named Ralph. Weathersby's music accompanying these tales uses rudimentary folk-rock arrangements that don't get in the way of the group singing. "Big Big World" sounds like something from the Talking Heads/David Byrne catalog, but otherwise this is music with simple melodies played in a simple, semi-professional style. Children will have no trouble singing along, but parents may quickly find the songs tiresome, and the more musically adept will have trouble with the varying pitch in the singing.
