Album Review

The word "chops" is a major understatement when describing the talents of guitarist Joe Pass and bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. Their duo Pablo date (which has been reissued as a CD in the OJC series) is as exciting and full of inventive interplay as one would hope. Pass and Pedersen play an ad-lib blues, nine jazz standards including a three-quarters version of "Lover Man," plus "Oleo," "Quiet Nights," "Tricrotism," and "Yardbird Suite." Pass in particular sounds stimulated during this session and comes up with some of his hottest playing.

A Landmark In Jazz Guitar

Pass and N-HOP are a perfect duo to take some of the greatest jazz standards on the book, including the much overdone Yardbird Suite. Pass really shows his chops and gentleness on Quiet Nights.

Why is this called "Chopspolished"?

I have the old LP released on Pablo - it was called "Chops". Song list and song order are identical... This is a GREAT recording; highly recommended!

A Wonderful Album

I happen to be an avid jazz and classical listener as well as a jazz musician, and have been listening to joe pass for years. I must say this is one of his best albums by far. Niels-Henning does some wonderful bass work in Have You Met Miss Jones? If you buy this album make sure to listen to Oleo and Yardbird Suite. They must be some of the best songs joe has ever played! Wonderful Album. If your a jazz fan, or a fan of joe pass, this must be one of the albums in your collection!

Joe Pass did the near-impossible. He was able to play up-tempo versions of bop tunes such as "Cherokee" and "How High the Moon" unaccompanied on the guitar. Unlike Stanley Jordan, Pass used conventional (but superb) technique,...
