Here is a guide to your new best friends.

This is a two disc set that was compiled from the performances at a weekend retreat for singer-songwriter type folk on Martha's Vineyard. Not every song on these two discs will change your life...but I used this album and it's predesessor as a kind of TV Guide to sample artists of this genre. Buddy Mondlock on "Magnolia Street", Anne Hills' "Follow That Road" and Red Grammer's "These are the Times" stand alone and are worth the price of admission. Hilarious songs like "The Speculator" and "Life is Hard" mix with sweet heartbreakers like "Wearing the Time". Discovering the sexy friskiness of Kristina Olsen (I've ended up with three of her albums)... Barbara Kessler's bright songwriting (I've ended up with two albums), Diane Zeigler (two albums), Cliff Eberhardt (one album), Cheryl Wheeler (three albums)... I'm sure I'm what Christine Laven hoped for when she compiled these discs, turning me on to all her musical buddies and selling some music for them. (Also check out her other compilations, "On A Winter's Night" being my favorite.) Thanks Christine.

I was there and it was AWESOME !

I can not tell you how wonderful it was to co-produce these great performances. As Manager of the Wintertide Coffeehouse I had the great good fortune to meet Christine Lavin who opened our door to the incredible talent you will find on this cd. Each piece was recorded live and as it happened - audience included. We had such fun - this was not the first year of the retreats and there is another disc out there called Big Times in A Small town which was the first. There are two others that were not released by Rounder (one called Love Keep us Together) with an original piece by Martin Sexton as the title song. I have some of these around and would gladly trade them for Wintertide memorabilia.. Anyhow- check out this cd and be amazed - These artists were relatively new at the time (except a few such as legendary Dave Van Ronk. I wish you could have been there for the many overnight jams that took place every night of the retreats. Some magic happened for sure...

A great snapshot of a thriving folk scene

Christine Lavin's Songwriter's Workshops produced some great sets, and this one is no exception. My favorites on this set are "Born a Little Late," "Heart on the Run," and "Hard Day Yesterday."
