iTunes Review

Christmas With Weezer delivers on its title — six covers of well known (and mostly religious) yuletide carols cranked up and rocked out with the unmistakable sound that the band's fans know and love like family. Initially recorded for the previously released iPhone OS game Christmas With Weezer, it makes perfect sense for a power-pop band to blast through tunes that are under three minutes long. “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” opens with fuzzy guitar distortion and Rivers Cuomo singing like he means it, especially when he shouts the "We won’t leave until we get some" part before a short and tasteful solo softly erupts. The doubled vocals on “O Come All Ye Faithful” fit well, while the singular sung track on the more subdued verses of “O Holy Night” is conversely appropriate. “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” plays appropriately triumphant and their take on the mellower “Silent Night” stays true to form, though the buzzing guitars almost sound like the ghost of of shoegaze past since the tempo is mellower than most Weezer recordings. Similarly, “The First Noel” moves with a peaceful pulse as Cuomo croons over warm blankets of crumbling guitar crunch.

I'm quite shocked

I'm not shocked at how amazingly Weezer reworked this classic Christmas songs. I'm not shocked at Weezer's amazingness. I'm shocked that they went with true Christmas songs. You know, the one's you'd more than likely sing in church around Christmas time. I don't know what their religious views are but I have to give them big, BIG props for that choice. I first heard about this because of the Christmas with Weezer app with the people that made Tap Tap Revenge and I loved their reworking of those classic Christmas songs. So I strongly suggest purchasing this whether you are a Weezer fan or not. Whether you are a Christian or not. I give Weezer HUGE props.

Traditional Christmas songs... Traditional Weezer Sound

As a huge fan of Weezer, I downloaded this album the moment I heard about it, and I was not disappointed. There are no new songs here. Every track is a Christmas classic and they don't tinker with the lyrics or the melodies, which works surprisingly well. All too often artists go so far out of their way to find some completely new interpretation of a classic that they neglect to understand why these songs are considered classics in the first place. That's why this is such a good album. They don't mess with the essence of the songs, but anyone who hears them clearly knows this is a Weezer album. Their unique sound is front and center. If you think about it, that's one of Weezer's trademarks. A lot of their material has a classic feel to it. They know how to create something new that completely fits into a retro sound. In this case, the material isn't new but the sound is completely classic Weezer.

Dear Music Snob...

Weezer is playing Christmas songs. Do bands have to tweak every song they decide to play to make it thier own? This album is EXACTLY what I expected when I read the title "Christmas With Weezer." Christmas songs performed by Weezer... not remixes, not rewritten, and nothing added to it (except for an occasional solo). It takes a true artist to know when to leave well enough alone. Get over yourself and enjoy the season. Merry Christmas.

Biography

Formed: 1993 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

As one of the most popular groups to emerge in the post-grunge alternative rock aftermath, Weezer received equal amounts of criticism and praise for their hook-heavy guitar pop. Drawing from the heavy power pop of arena rockers like Cheap Trick and the angular guitar leads of the Pixies, Weezer leavened their melodies with doses of '70s metal learned from bands like Kiss. What truly set the band apart, though, was their geekiness. None of the members of Weezer, especially leader Rivers...
