iTunes Review

Recorded in 1981 while he was still part of Weather Report, bass virtuoso Jaco Pastorius' ambitious and richly detailed second solo album sounds like a minor masterpiece today. Harmonica and steel drums often bubble to the forefront as he inventively overhauls Bach ("Chromatic Fantasy"), The Beatles ("Blackbird"), and even Weather Report's "Birdland" ("Liberty City"). Bandmates including saxophonist Wayne Shorter and drummer Peter Erskine helped Pastorius radically extend jazz-fusion's potential into the big-band realm. Overachievement has rarely sounded as fun.

Track 2???

I do not HATE this album - I once had a vinyl copy. However, replacing Track 2 with the "live" version makes no sense. I did some research & found that the "live" recording can be found on "The Birthday Concert" album. Why a perfectly good song was replaced by a "live" version is beyond comprehension Therefore, I rated it as such & will not purchase it online unless the original album is made available for purchase. Younger people being introduced to Mr. Pastorious for the first time may want to consider this album, but, as someone who is familiar with his work (including Weather Report), should definitely skip this one until the ORIGINAL album is available.

Exceptional recording, this is a masterpiece. Jaco's arrangements and playing are fantastic. This is a must own recording for jazz enthusiasts, bassists, and anyone who is interested in hearing Jaco's whole range of genius. Enjoy!

My first Jaco CD 20+ years ago & still amazing!!!

Jaco Pastorius was a meteor who blazed on to the scene in the 1970s, only to flame out tragically in the 1980s. With a brilliantly fleet technique and fertile melodic imagination, Pastorius made his fretless electric bass leap out from the depths of the rhythm section into the front line with fluid machine-gun-like passages that demanded attention. He also sported a strutting, dancing, flamboyant performing style and posed a further triple-threat as a talented composer, arranger and producer. He...
