Editors’ Notes

Stepping out of Detroit in the mid-'90s, Slum Village made waves with its legendary debut, Fantastic Vol. 1, which was never released but was heavily bootlegged. The group's initial lineup included T3, Baatin, and a promising beatmaker named Jay Dee—who'd eventually be known and loved the world over as J Dilla. Slum Village went through several lineup changes and never really blew up, but the group's everyman rhymes and smoothed-out production won it a loyal underground following. Between 2000 and 2010, Slum Village released a half-dozen full-lengths (most notably Fantastic Vol. 2 and Detroit Deli). On B Sides, we get 10 high-quality joints from throughout the group's career, with A-list features from guests like De La Soul, Phife Dawg, ?uestlove, Marsha Ambrosius, Frank N Dank, Skyzoo, and more. Check out "The Look of Love Pt. 2," "Church Remix," and "The Worlds Full of Sadness."
