Editors’ Notes

When she takes her naturally beautiful soprano voice into high-lonesome territory, Canadian singer Lindi Ortega garners comparisons to Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris. But from the opening title track of her 2012 sophomore album, Cigarettes & Truckstops, it’s evident she has more in common with Sunny Sweeny’s drive to keep country sounding traditional. Moreover, Ortega laces her songs with a shadowy darkness. With a bouncing stand-up bass and shuffling rhythms on the snare drum, “The Day You Die” introduces some slick rockabilly style, without resorting to the kind of throwback punk anachronisms found in those hip bar bands with bad ink and leopard-print-clad Bettie Page look-alikes. The melancholy in her voice on the honky-tonk weeper “Lead Me On” sounds even direr alongside Colin Lindin’s haunting guitar tones, which play like a spaghetti western being filmed in Bakersfield during the early '60s. With sinister slide guitar and swampy reverb, “The Murder of Crows” proves to be the album’s gem.

The real deal

Why in the hell is Taylor Swift considered country? This is the real deal folks. Itunes please put Taylor in the pop category where she belongs

So glad I discovered her!

This is true country music. I really love and appreciate the old sound---she reminds me of listening to music of another time. I'm glad some country artists stay country and not bring pop/rock in to their music!
Give Lindi Ortega a listen!!

Now THAT´S Country, my friend! Beautiful voice… Loving the old-fashioned sound! Thank god for singers that don´t turn good ol´country into boring pop music…:-)
