iTunes Review

This collection of Neil Young covers benefits Casting for Recovery, a national non-profit support and educational program for women who have or have had breast cancer. Young’s tunes have been well covered over the years: The late Nicolette Larson’s “Lotta Love” being among the more famous. And here a wide range of female performers deliver their own take on this idiosyncratic rockers’ catalog, either tending towards his smoother sides or removing his prickly edges, from “I Am A Child” to “Helpless” to “The Needle and the Damage Done.” Young may have made these songs sound like alienation anthems, but in other hands they sound welcoming and reassuring. Amilia K. Spicer nicely compliments “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” with a heartfelt rendition that points up the power of Young’s simple but never simplistic melodies. Dala turns “Ohio” into a poignant piano ballad. Kristin Hersh adds an otherworldly buzz to “Like A Hurricane.” The Watson Twins harmonize for a modest acoustic take on Young’s “Powderfinger.” Heidi Gluck of Some Girls keeps Young’s buckling kick for “Walk On.”

Excellent Tribute!!!

Wow! This is a fantastic tribute and for a great cause too. Having women artists cover Neil Young songs is so much fun and brings something new to Neil's songs. There's way too many tracks to comment about but I do have favorites: Tanya Donelly's "Heart of Gold" is rich and sumptuous, Britta Phillip's "I Am A Child" is dreamy and has a Nancy Sinatra cool to it, Jill Sobule and John Doe doing "Down By The River" is just perfect. I also love Josie Cotton's "Cowgirl in the Sand" and Veruca Salt's "Burned". And who is Dala? They cover two songs and both are just amazingly beautiful. It's really a fantastic collection of artists and songs. I highly recommend it.

First, let me say I'm not a huge Neil Young fan, though I have a deep respect and appreciation for the man's talent. Some people may be disappointed at not hearing these songs done exactly like Neil Young did them, but I think this is awesome! And, okay, they managed to cover most of my favorites. It's refreshing to hear someone else's interpretation of his music. I don't recognize all the names, but there's a lot of talent here. Each artist puts her own spin on the music, and that's what makes it so interesting. Just listen to "Ohio": both versions are totally different sounds, and they both blew me away! "A Man Needs a Maid" is beautifully done, both the vocals and the instruments. Sure to be one of my all-time faves. Way to go, ladies!!!

Great album..worth the $$$..

First of all.. keep it simple. I'm a big Neil fan. He has a very diverse body of work. Perfect for other artists to cover. Not to many artists can say that. I love the Neil originals. But to hear covers by all females to benefit breast cancer is a special occasion for a good cause. That being said the covers are fantastic. Perfect weekend or Sunday morning music. Highly recommend this album. Very original versions of classic Neil and obscure. Enjoy!
